A Wintry Wander at Hoskins Creek
Home to one of the largest mature forests in Ashtabula County, Hoskins features many trees that are 80 to 110 feet tall, with a dozen over 110 feet. Two creeks meander through the preserve, including nearly half a mile of Hoskins Creek. In addition to northern two-lined salamanders, an indicator species of healthy headwater streams, the creek supports Great Lakes crayfish—a species of concern in Ohio—and at least 10 fish species. We’ll also look out for rusty blackbirds, a species in decline across its range. These birds favor wooded wetlands, which Hoskins has in abundance. Bring your boots!
