Brook Trout at Bass Lake
Join naturalists from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Geauga Park District for a summer outing at the Museum’s Bass Lake Preserve. Paul Pira, Wildlife Biologist with the Geauga Park District and the local authority on the Chagrin River headwaters native brook trout population, will give an on-site introduction to this ice age relict species. We’ll net brook trout for a close-up look while Pira outlines the habitat needs of the fish and how those conditions are still met in the Chagrin River headwaters that flow into Bass Lake. He’ll also share details about the collaboration among multiple agencies currently working to preserve vulnerable stream habitat, propagate native trout, and introduce them into other coldwater streams in our region. In addition, we'll walk a trail that follows an old interurban rail line, enjoying outstanding views of the wetlands in the interior of the preserve.
