Magnificent McCoy
Saturday, October 8th
Join us for an autumn hike at the spectacular McCoy Fen State Nature Preserve, one of the most significant fens known in Ohio. The fen is home to many rare plants—the state-endangered velvet-leaved blueberry, the state-threatened slender willow, robust smartweed, and others.
Sandhill cranes, beavers, and muskrats frequent McCoy’s superb wetlands. A variety of mollusks can be found in the State Wild and Scenic Pymatuning Creek, which runs through the heart of the preserve. If you’re game, we’ll cross a beaver dam to the kames—a type of glacial landform—that rise from the surrounding wetlands like enormous, forest-covered turtles.
