Teaching with Tombstones: Geology at the Cemetery

Saturday, October 7, 2023

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Join Dr. Joe Hannibal, Curator Emeritus of Invertebrate Paleontology, for a special geology walking tour through Lake View Cemetery, an elegant, Victorian-style cemetery located near the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Lake View Cemetery contains a wealth of geological features, both natural and built. On this two-hour walk, Dr. Hannibal will guide us through some of the southernmost sections of the 285-acre cemetery. He’ll share his expertise on the cemetery’s stones, including granite, marble, limestone, shale, sandstone, Berea Sandstone, and more. We’ll explore diverse points of geological interest—such as gravestones, monuments, and mausoleums—and enjoy the natural architecture of these historic grounds, which serve as the final resting place for some of Cleveland’s most celebrated residents.

Be sure to join Dr. Hannibal again on Saturday, October 28, to continue the experience on the northern side of the cemetery.
