Two Gems: Cathedral Woods & Armstrong Hemlock Swamp
Join us as we explore two small but gorgeous natural areas. Cathedral Woods Preserve is the only remaining mature hemlock–hardwood forest on beach ridge sands in our region. It boasts a diversity of canopy trees, including hemlock, yellow birch, tuliptree, cucumber magnolia, various oaks, and one of Ohio’s finest populations of the state-endangered striped maple, Acer pensylvanicum. Next we'll visit the old-growth hemlocks of Armstrong Hemlock Swamp, where a headwater stream winds among the giant trees, some more than 2 feet in diameter. We plan to stop by a local winery afterward—you’re welcome to join us!
